Ye-Ha!!

We have a multitude of Cowboys, Indians, Wild West townsfolk, Saloon Girls and even a horse roaming and dancing around our school this Term… Preparations and rehearsals are well under way for our whole school Production on September 2nd and 3rd at the Burrinja Theatre. Ticket information coming home soon… Make sure you grab yours quick to get the best seats in the house. It’s going to be a real Ye-Ha of a show!

Footy Fever

We have been lucky enough to secure six week’s worth of footy clinics for all year levels from Foundation to Grade 6 due to a ‘Sporting Schools’ sporting grant we applied for. What a great introduction for students new to the sport as well as a great opportunity for students who already play footy to practise and develop their skills further.

100 Days Smarter

Our Foundation students have been ticking off each day on the calendar since their first day at school way back in February. Tuesday marked the day when we reached the very exciting 100th day milestone so our Foundies celebrated in style with a ‘free dress’ day, party food, lots of games and 100 day themed activities and a spot of jelly making (and eating)! Much fun was had by all!

Our fabulous Foundies with their teachers, Rhian and Lisa.

Calling 2020 Foundies…

It’s that exciting time of year when we start meeting our future Ferny Creek students… Yes, it’s kinder to school Transition time! Please share these dates with any families you know or feel may like to be part of our wonderful ‘little school upon the mountain’. No need to book – just turn up 5 minutes before the given times and head to the Office to sign in where one of our current Foundation teachers and friendly office staff will greet you and your special little person! We look forward to it…

*Please note that our ‘Book Week’ Transition (Tuesday August 21st) finished at 10:15am (not 10:45am as originally stated.) Thank you and please accept our apologies for any inconvenience.

Trivia Night

Ferny Creek PS has joined forces with a neighbouring school and pre-school (Sassafras) to bring you our Toon Time Trivia Night! It sounds like it’s going to be a great night with lots of fun and hopefully not too tricky questions! Come and support these three local school/kinder… Call Amanda to book your seats!

Back to Earth… our submission (please vote!)

We have recently submitted our application to the ‘Back to Earth’ competition. At Ferny Creek primary school, we have a long history of teaching children the importance of valuing our environment.  We have put a project forward (The 3RRRs of Composting) where we will collect weeds and other green waste from the school grounds and any creek projects to grow veggies, flowers, native plants and tree saplings for our kids, families and community to enjoy.

FCPS Veggie patch maintenance crew in action

We are encouraging our families, friends and community to show their support for our school and our Back to Earth competition entry by vising this link and placing your vote for Ferny Creek Primary School – https://competitions.backtoearth.vic.gov.au/

Here is a snippet of what our application included:

PROJECT OVERVIEW (What do you want to do, build, buy, create? How does the project tie in to the Back to Earth Initiative?

Our school has Ferny Creek running through the grounds.  This creek line and the adjacent vegetation provides habitat for a number of rare species and is a haven for local wildlife.  The EnviroKnights, a group of more than 40 children from the School, are involved with managing the creek and clearing weeds.  We wish to buy two compost tumblers, three worm farms and build three ‘potted paddock inground worm farms’.  All weeds and green waste will be recovered by the EnviroKnights and parents during working bees for recycling.  The children will use the composts to (i) grow and propagate indigenous plants to re-vegetate new areas of the School grounds, (ii) grow vegetables and flowers for the kitchen and sensory gardens, and (iii) grow trees for planting through the school’s sustainability program.  The whole school community, Friends of Ferny Creek, Southern Dandenongs Landcare will be partners for this project.

PROJECT OUTCOMES (What are the expected outcomes/benefits of the project? Who will the project benefit? Selection Criteria 2)

By recovering, recycling and our re-use of weeds from the creek and school grounds, the children will (i) understand the reasons why weed removal creates healthy waterways and habitats; (ii) participate in activities that grow plants that can be used in the kitchen garden program, the school grounds and re-vegetate areas with local indigenous plants and (iii) grow trees for planting to capture carbon to reduce each child’s future environmental footprint – if you plant 4 trees per year for 3 years, in 10 years each child will have a way of offsetting their personal emissions of greenhouse gases permanently.

Happy Halloween

IMG_3404 (1)Happy Halloween and a very big thankyou to everyone who contributed to the success of Halloween on The Green on the weekend. It was a fantastic community event and it was wonderful to see so many of our families getting their ghoul on and joining in the fun!

Science Week

The infamous Professor Ratbaggy helped us to kick off Science Week with a bang! His experiments had everyone giggling and screaming with excitement – balloons under pressure and ginormous bubbles!  IMG_3329

A Big Thank You!

 Dear Parents and Friends,

I would like to say a very big thank you to all of you, students, parents and staff for your vote of confidence in appointing me as your substantive Principal. I am so excited, I have been ‘walking on sunshine’ since I was offered the position. I have many ideas that I have been sharing with staff that I look forward to putting into place as we move onwards and upwards on this journey together.

We have a beautiful school and we are achieving positive results. I look forward to taking us to being known as a school that supports high achievement in all areas whilst providing a safe and nurturing environment with the support of a close and caring community.

Term 4 will be a very busy term as we embark on our school ‘Self-Evaluation’ process. This course of action is quite a rigorous one that involves all members of our community participating in surveys, forums and data analysis. I will keep the community informed as we work through this process.

Meanwhile, thank you for all your kind messages and words of encouragement. I can now finally ‘unpack my case’, and get settled in!

Anni

‘School of Rock!’

The Multi-Purpose Room could have been mistaken for Rod Laver Arena today as our two awesome upper-school Rock Bands raised the roof with fantastic performances of Pink, Adele and Shawn Mendes’ songs. Our talented Year 5 and 6 vocalists and musicians had the crowd captivated; with students, parents and teachers alike bopping along to the contemporary songs.

We are very fortunate to have such a wonderful Instrumental Music Program at Ferny Creek Primary. Thankyou Dean for all that you do to lead, support and encourage our budding rock-stars!

Fantastic Fun at Ferny with Fathers and Footys!

On the last day of Winter, the Ferny Creek Primary School community embraced the chill for our annual Footy Day! The day kicked off with a colourful assembly and some hearty singing of club songs. We acknowledged all of our wonderful dads and then enjoyed watching them don their boots and go head to head with the Year 6s in a mighty Footy match!

All year levels had stacks of fun taking part in the AFL Footy Roadshow inflatable activity program and then to top off a great day, there were hot pies and sausage rolls for lunch! Thankyou to everyone who helped make this day such a great success!

Book Week 2018 ‘Find Your Treasure’

Cameron Semmens, award-winning poet and performer, delivered fun and lively poetry workshops to Ferny Creek Primary School students last week as part of Book Week. Students were delighted by Cam’s ‘performance poetry’ and inspired to craft fantastic pieces of their own.

Pick My Project

Pick My Project – Voting is now open!
‘Pick My Project’ is a Victoria-first community grants initiative, with at least $1 million in funding available in each metro and regional area. The projects that garnish the most votes at the conclusion of the community voting process will have the opportunity to turn their project into reality. So please spread the word among your family and friends! Our project is entitled:
‘Community Inclusive Environmental Learn and Play Space’

The aim of our project is to incorporate full accessibility for all in our existing outdoor environmental learn and play areas. This includes our existing Kitchen Garden, Henhouse and Frog Bog Wetland areas. Included in this project will be fully accessible sensory garden (Bush Tucker) and a story telling space among our gum trees. We are looking at creating pathways, edging, boardwalk, railings, fencing, gates, sleepers, raised garden beds for disabled access, plants for the sensory garden and a covered area with seating.
Voting is now open until 17th September. We strongly encourage you to vote. Every vote counts!
To vote simply log onto www.pickmyproject.vic.gov.au, register, insert the name of the project or suburb into the search bar, then cast your vote.

OUR GRAND OPENING!

A very exciting day was had last Friday when the new under cover area was officially opened!

It was wonderful to have James Merlino visit our school to open the new area.

This under cover play space will be a fantastic edition to our school on those wet and freezing cold Ferny Creek days!

The Streeton Art Awards 2018

For the 4th year running, student artists in The Dandenong Ranges and outer East of Melbourne have had the opportunity to have their work recognised and exhibited through The Streeton Student Art Awards. Students are able to enter artworks of any medium and may enter as many times as they wish.

On Friday 26th May, Elizabeth Lynch from Upwey Secondary School came to the Ferny Creek Primary School assembly to acknowledge and present awards to 4 of our talented students.

We’d like to extend a huge congratulations to Eliza and Evie in the junior school and Ashley and Lily in the upper school whose works were all highly commended. Evie’s work ‘Butterfly Wishes’ indeed was the winning artwork in the Lower Primary Category!

We are all very proud of the initiative shown by these students to take part in these awards and are thrilled that their amazing artworks have been recognised. Well done everyone!

For more information regarding these awards head to: upweyartsfestival.comIMG_3648

Open Night 2018

Thank-you to our wonderful school community for supporting our Open Night last night. There was a happy buzz in the school as families participated in our ‘Learning Walk Challenge’; hunting for clues and answers related to student learning this term. It was a delight to see our students taking such pride in their achievements and confidently engaging with the wider community.

New Covered Play Space at Ferny Creek

Its nearly here!

A lot has been happening on our netball/playground area this term.  Thanks to a Better Schools Grant from James Merlino our school will soon have a state of the art undercover play area.  This is something we have always needed, as in the wet weather, through terms 3 and 4 especially, the children are kept inside.  The covered area also comes with new basketball and netball rings, new lines, lighting and power!

Parent Teacher Student Conferences

Parent/student Teacher Conferences

In a couple of weeks we are holding the first of our Parent teacher conferences for 2018. We have selected two evenings, Tuesday 29th May and Wednesday 29th May. Since 2015 some of our meeting have included the student in the feedback time. We are continuing, 2018, to run them as follows:

  • Foundation: Parent and teacher only
  • Years 1 and 2: Students complete self assessment and students are given the option of attending
  • Years 3 and 4: Students complete self assessment and are strongly encouraged to include student.
  • Years 5 and 6: Students must attend as a key to transitioning to secondary where three way conferences are most common practice.

Remember that we do understand that one model does not fit all. It may not be suitable for all students above Year 1 attend. But also remember that the conferences are to discuss your child’s progress thus far in 2018. Any other topics of discussion should be done by making an alternative appointment.

Letter of information will be sent home next week.

  • Including how to book in
  • What the self assessment is all about

Booking will be by sheets in foyer or emailing or calling the school from Friday 18th May
